Steelhead Flies
Purple Shrimp (a.k.a. Coho Candy) Fly
In 2004 I hooked six coho on this fly, four in one day.
Materials for Coho Candy Fly:
Hook: TMC 105 glo-bug, size 6. Body: Brite Blend Purple dubbing mix by Spirit River. Tail: Purple marabou, (spikey feather tip stuff). Four strands Purple Krystal Flash
Thread: Hot Pink.
Tie on the tying thread so it covers part of the bend of the hook.
Start by tying in a tail of purple marabou fibers approximately 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch long and four strands of purple Krystal Flash. Tie the tail so it is coming off the hook just past where the shank starts to bend. This gives the tail a slight angle with respect to the hook shank and an overall "bent" look to the fly.
Next dub a sparse, tapered body using the Brite Blend mix and hot pink thread. Start out dubbing slightly thicker at the base of the tail and taper out evenly to the eye of the hook.
Tie in a small bunch of dubbing at the throat. Finish the fly and pick out some of the dubbing underneath the hook.
